Who Needs a Visa?
Most international travelers require a visa to enter Bhutan, except for citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. These nationals follow a permit process rather than a traditional visa and have separate requirements and fees.
Tourist Visa Application Process
Online Application: You can apply for a Bhutan visa online via the official tourism website, or your licensed tour operator or hotel can apply on your behalf.
Visa Application Fee: A non-refundable, one-time fee of US$40 per person.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): US$100 per adult per night (concessionary rates apply for children).
Processing: Once your application and fees are submitted, you will receive a visa authorization letter via email. Present this letter upon arrival in Bhutan, where your visa will be stamped into your passport at Paro International Airport or at designated land border entry points.
Required Documents:
- A digital copy of your valid passport (with at least six months’ validity)
- A recent digital passport-sized photo
- Arrival and departure dates
- Valid travel insurance for the duration of your trip
- Payment details for visa fees and the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
Special Notes
No Embassy Issuance: Bhutanese visas are not issued by embassies overseas; all processing is managed online or through authorized operators, and the actual visa is granted upon arrival.
Travel Insurance: While the mandatory insurance requirement was lifted in 2024, it is still highly recommended to have travel insurance covering medical emergencies and evacuation.
Visa Exemptions
India, Bangladesh, Maldives: Nationals of these countries need a permit, not a visa. Indian travelers can use a passport or voter ID card and may apply for a permit in advance or on arrival.
Diplomatic and Official Passports: Holders of diplomatic, UN, or official passports from certain countries may be eligible for gratis (free) visas.
Entry Requirements
Pre-Approval Needed: All visa applications must be approved before arrival, except for nationals eligible for permits.
SDF Waiver: Occasionally, Bhutan offers SDF waivers or discounts for specific border regions or periods; check current policies before booking.
Summary
Bhutan’s visa process is designed to be straightforward and supports the country’s commitment to sustainable tourism. By following the official steps and preparing the required documents and fees, travelers can ensure a smooth entry into the Kingdom of Bhutan.
